Gobble Gobble: Thanksgiving Comes to City Year Washington, DC

by Brittany Comegna, corps member serving on The CSX Civic Engagement Team

“I am thankful to be able to live,” I signed at my family’s Thanksgiving dinner two years ago, sending a knowing gaze into my father’s direction. Every Thanksgiving, I am reminded how precious the gift of life is because my grandmother passed away one Thanksgiving night a decade before I was born.

For this reason, I was excited when my team, the CSX Civic Engagement team at City Year Washington, DC, decided to continue the tradition of hosting a collection for the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot.

Caught #goodspotting! Corps members Erica Heller and Whitney Parnell of the CSX Civic Engagement Team get silly at DCCK

DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) is one of City Year DC’s long time community partners, and one of Washington’s largest soup kitchens. We were happy to rally the corps to come up with a gaggle of turkeys to donate so that DCCK could continue its tradition of providing a hearty holiday meal to those who might otherwise go without.

The camaraderie and commitment to going above and beyond in this year’s corps was showcased in the generosity of the donations the Civic Engagement Team collected.  After two weeks of reaching out to our fellow City Year Washington, DC corps members, the Civic Engagement team raked in a whopping 440.59 pounds worth of turkey for a total of $427.53 to give to the DC General Kitchen. Those 30 turkeys will be donated to DC families in need for the holidays, so, like many other Americans, the kids at the table can say, “I am thankful for the turkey on this table.”

What are you thankful for at this Thanksgiving?
The City Year Washington, DC corps is full of the goodwill that comes with the holiday spirit, and our Turkey Trot is just one example of this. To help spread this spirit, we’re going #Goodspotting with our friends at the Case Foundation, and you can too!
