Nearly 200 volunteers from Starbucks, NCCC and youth from around the District joined City Year on Saturday, April 12 for Starbucks’ Global Month of Service and Global Youth Service Day. Volunteers participated in gardening, landscaping, construction and painting projects at Langley Elementary School and McKinley Technology High School in Northeast Washington. They built picnic tables, benches and garden boxes and painted inspirational quotes and murals around the schools.
Volunteers provided approximately $25,000 in value and improvements to Langley Elementary School and McKinley Technology High School.
Celebrating 26 years, Global Youth Service Day (April 11-13, 2014) recognizes the positive impact that young people have on their communities year-round. Held each year in April, Global Youth Service Day is a time when millions of young people come together for celebrations and community service projects, often designed to address and raise awareness around tough community issues. With Global Youth Service Day projects in all 50 states and more than 135 countries, it is the largest service event in the world.
